Manufacturing Madness

Phew, January was an absolute nightmare of balancing all the stock coming in, setting up the manufacturing software, all whilst re-designing the factory layout over and over again to make sure its robust! But thankfully its all done and now we are ready to start actually building machines in the next 2 weeks.

HOWEVER, talking about making machine, we need to know where to send them. Backer kit emails have been blasted out to everyone, so please, please please please

I cannot stress this enough, the BackerKit survey tells us where we are sending the machines to, if we don’t have your survey, we cant send them out – also as a side note, you can actually get more add-ons in the BackerKit shop, including more printers, because we realised Kickstarter doesn’t let you pledge more than once which I found pretty strange.

now on with the rest of the updates.

Heat Bed Upgrades

We found a small flaw in the design about a month ago which would only show up in extreme heat scenarios well past traditional operational limits (think 45C room temps) where the fuses would overheat when under full load, AND only if the fuse wasn’t seated correctly.

The annoying thing is this scenario wouldn’t actually trip the fuse, it would just slowly melt the fuse holder. Whilst this is well above the accepted safety standards needed to sell the printers, and literally zero people would find this fault – it just didn’t sit right with us that we found a possible flaw. So we decided to upgrade all the printers with SSR relays to completely overkill the solution.

Factory Glow Up

With the factory almost complete, I can share some cool pictures.

We now have a dedicated print farm area large enough for ~10 machines. This is where we will be stress testing the machines over the next few years as they make all the hidden 3D printed components that are used to assemble the printers.  (and yes, the current printers were only placed there for scale, we will be using our own as these don’t have the quality or reliability to be used in production)

Beds and Gantry arrived

Another cool thing which no one will find cool, we finally got our factory insurance, so we can start moving in all the stock from our living room into the factory. When we received all these packages, it definitely start to hit home how amazing and close we are to starting manufacturing.

We even got CCTV now fitted.

But yeah, that’s pretty much it from me for this update.  Again I cannot stress enough about everyone checking their emails for Backer Kit. We will probably lock the orders in the next 2-3 weeks, so if you do not get your survey fitted by then we will contact you directly. Other than that, I will leave you with the worst OSHA violation I saw thanks to the electricians we used.

Seriously, I’m pretty sure the H&S manual caught fire when seeing this
